Hello there, here’s everything you need to know if you would like to play the Bodega Quiz, Newcastle’s legendary pub quiz, which is currently being played online.
Please note, we are taking a break for one week on Thursday 6th August. We will be back online on Thursday 13th August.
We’re running the quiz completely free of charge but, if you’re in a position to, it would be great if you could support the Trussell Trust, the UK’s largest food bank charity, with your quiz entry of £1.
If you’ve played before, I’ll post the picture rounds and answer forms in a separate post on this blog at around 19.00 (UK) in Thursday 30th July.
If you’re a first timer, read on for some info on how to join in. If you have any questions you can ask them here in the comments, or catch me on twitter @enterthezarbi
Step 1: Assemble your team
A pub quiz is about the team. People get together with their teams to play the quiz via Zoom, House Party, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Skype and other messaging services. You’ll need one window (or screen) for your team chat and another for the livestream at twitch.tv/bodegaquiz. You can chat with me, or ask any questions you might have, using twitch’s chat function.
Step 2: twitch
I’ll be broadcasting via twitch.tv/bodegaquiz from around 20.15 UK time on Thursday 30th July. You don’t have to register a twitch account to watch the stream, but you do if you want to take part in the chat (which might be useful if you want any clarifications on questions).
Step 3: Answers
1. Order of play
I strongly recommend you keep a paper copy of your answers so you can keep your own score if things go awry. You can download an answer sheet here: excel, word, pdf (the excel is the only one you can type into for reasons).
If you don’t have access to a printer, but do have access to some paper you can write on, the running order is this:
- 1st half (all rounds 10 questions): Round 1: Picture Round; Round 2: Pot Luck; Round 3: Sports, Games and Pastimes; Round 4: Are You Smarter than an 11-year-old?
- 2nd half (all rounds 10 questions): Round 5: TV, Books and Films; Round 6: Link Round; Round 7: Music Round
2. Submit your answers via Google forms
Nominate one member of your team to submit your answers to us for marking (links to this week’s forms will be posted with the picture round on Thursday). We will mark them and give you the answers and scores at the end of each half.
Each question has its own box, and the forms will be populated with the the options for any multiple choice questions. Unfortunately, because of the way the quiz is set up (there’s a little bit of automation to help us speed up the marking), the forms are going to ask you to provide an email address. Please see my note about this at the bottom of this post (in brief: I’ll permanently delete your data from my storage as soon as I’ve posted the classified quiz results, but I’m not 100% sure what google will do).
Please, please, please use the same email address and team name for both halves of the quiz.
I’ll post this week’s google forms together with the picture round on Thursday. These will be new forms with new links – we won’t see any answers submitted via last week’s forms.
Step 4: Picture Rounds
I’ll post this week’s picture round in a new post on this blog at around 19.00 (UK time) on Thursday, alongside the answer forms. I’ll let you know via social media – my twitter and the pub’s facebook – when it’s up.
Step 5: Enjoy!
If you enjoyed it last week, do tell your friends, and consider making a donation to the Trussell Trust if you’re in a position to.
The google form will ask you to provide an email address because that’s the only way I can find to allow me to manually check your answers before I release your scores. I will permanently delete all email addresses from my records as soon as the quiz is done and the results posted. However, I’m not 100% sure what google will do with your data. Here are google’s terms and conditions if you want to check. If in doubt, I suggest setting up a new dummy email for yourself.
